VARRBER, SWEDEN-(9-8-2005) Iain Percy and Steve Mitchell have taken the Star Europeans by storm. Appearing for the first time this season on European waters, Percy and Mitchell secured two bullets today and took the lead in the Star fleet. Contrasting to yesterdays light and fickle winds, the breeze kicked in today at a strong and steady 16-20 knots helping the team produce some good results.
At the opening day of the Finn European Championships in Kalmar, Sweden, Ben Ainslie began to pave his way to a gold medal. Securing two first place finishes in the first two races of the regatta, Ainslie’s nearest competitor is already eight points behind him. “We had some tricky weather systems coming down on the course today.” Ainslie explained, “The first race was really close with the lead changing several times. I tried to keep my options open and sail the shifts and came out on top. Hopefully I can get some more good results during the rest of the week.”
At the Tornado Europeans, Vastervik, Sweden, the wind filled in and blew 15-20 knots for most of the day. Due to a short, inshore course the racing remained tight with boats swapping places for most of the day. Throughout the day the wind built and as a result boats suffered from the odd crash and breakage. After a disappointing first day, Rob Wilson and Mark Bulkeley scored a sixth and a ninth in today’s races. Bulkeley commented, “We had some really competitive racing out there today. We’ve had light winds for most of the season and today we had the chance to sail in some heavier winds. The top slots are still up for grabs as most boats have a mixed bag of results.”
Laura Baldwin had a notable performance at the Laser Radial Europeans in Split, Croatia. Finishing the day with a second and a third place, Baldwin has made leaps and bounds in her sailing career. Baldwin began competitive sailing five years ago and after a disappointing result at the Athens Olympics, today she has proved that she can hold her own among the best international competition. Lizzie Vickers also had some good results finishing with two seconds and jumping to sixth place overall.
At the Laser European Championships, Paul Goodison had two solid finishes catapulting him into sixth place overall. With a bullet in the second race Goodison will be looking to remain consistent from here on out.
